History
Calico, built in 1905, was originally erected as a church serving the
Mormon homestead community that settled and thrived along Mormon Row just
north of the town of Jackson. Sixty-one years later, two partners purchased
and moved the then abandoned church to Teton Village road naming it Calico
Pizza after a California ghost town. Changing ownership in 1995, proprietor
Jeff Davies rebuilt and remodeled the old building while preserving the
original church structure thus creating today's Calico Italian
Restaurant and Bar. Thanks to their foresight, Calico remains an important
part of Jackson Hole history.
Facilities
As you walk towards the Calico restaurant, its surroundings will instantly
take you to another place. Gardens full of sweet smelling flowers border
the walkways below the deck where people usually request seats. From the
deck, you have a relaxing, panoramic view of the gardens, the distant
Teton Mountains, and the open lawn where kids are often playing (instead
of finishing their food). Large plants and flowers are hung around the
decks canopy, separating the conversations of each table. If it
wasn't for the lack of the Mediterranean Sea nearby, you'd swear you were
dining on the Italian Riviera.
Inside, guests are seated below a raised ceiling woven together with
large wooden beams. The Italian design in the spacious main dining room
creates a relaxed atmosphere. From any seat in the room, you have a clear
view of the open kitchen, where the chefs are busy preparing the meals.
The northern section of the restaurant is the bar, separated from the
dining room by three large stained glass windows. Reminding us of the
original use of the building, the new stained glass windows were created
by a local artist to represent western life and good food. Inside the
bar, countless snapshots adorn the walls of past guests and events. As
you enjoy a special bar menu, you can shoot pool with your friends or
just relax by the stone fireplace.
The Calico has ample parking for guests, and has a START
bus stop. In the winter, the START bus stops every 1/2 hour in front
of the Calico. Handicap access and restrooms, including wide aisles and
an elevator, ensure that all are welcome.
Testimonials
"Usually I have to choose between a nice meal and a place I can take
my kids. The Calico is the exception."
"After spending some time in southern Italy, I became very picky
at Italian restaurants in the states. The food at the Calico has always
met my taste."
"Most owners usually hibernate in a back office. From the time we
arrived until we left, Jeff, the owner, was greeting people and making
sure the evening was perfect. Most knew him by name."
"I almost want to plan another trip to Jackson Hole, just to spend
an evening dining on the deck at the Calico."
